Fogged Window Repair

Do you have a window with condensation, “fog” or “dust” between the panes? You are not alone. This problem, most commonly referred to as a “fogged window”, occurs as a result of a failed window seal. The compromised window seal, allows moisture to enter between the panes and condensate to form water and give the appearance of fog. Over time, this condensation will leave mineral deposits on the glass giving your window a clouded look. To fix a fogged window pane, you don’t have to purchase a brand new window. At Allied Glass and Mirror, we will measure your window to fabricate a new insulated glass unit (IGU) and install it in your existing sash. Here is how we can fix your fogged window:

  1. Remove the existing insulated glass unit by unscrewing the screws in the window frame.
  2. Measure the height, width, and thickness of the existing insulated glass unit. Most insulated glass units are 7/8”, 5/8”, 3/4”, or 1/2” inches thick
  3. Fabricate a new insulated glass unit that matches the dimensions of the existing one
  4. Install a rubber gasket around the new insulated glass unit keeping the split in the gasket at the top
  5. Install the frame around the new unit and replace the screws
  6. Re-install the repaired window to its location

With a new insulated glass unit, your window will look as good as new. Your properly sealed window will also be more energy-efficient than the previous unit–saving you money on your energy bills. There are so many variables when it comes to styles of existing windows that it’s difficult to put an exact dollar figure on how much you can save by replacing your IGU instead of buying a new window. But in almost all cases, replacing the IGU is the most economical option.

OPTIONS FOR REPAIRING YOUR WINDOW

If you decide to repair your window instead of purchasing a new one, we will complete the repair within 5-10 business days from when you first contact us. We will give you a base price over the phone from the measurements you provide, and then we will schedule a time to take a field measurement of your window. After fabricating your new IGU, we will replace it using the process described above. If you are looking to save even more, you can bring your window sash to our location for repair. There are two different ways you can do this. One, you can bring the sash in for us to measure it and then take it back until the glass is ready to be installed. Or you can board-up your window opening, drop your window off at our glass shop, and pick up the sash when it’s done.
